Going Underground?

At 8 ¾ months pregnant, Tracey Parkes has everything she wants in life. A nice house, even if it is a bit on the small side, a long awaited baby on the way and a reliable husband to boot... Well, as reliable as a husband can be when he's keeping a long held secret - a secret she's desperate to uncover. But with Jonathan continuing to keep schtum over the whole thing, Tracey is forced to turn to his past for answers. And it's the unfortunate death of his old friend, Malcolm, that provides her with just the opportunity she's been waiting for - an opportunity she soon wishes she hadn't taken. Of course, the last thing Tracey expects is to find both herself and her humongous belly squashed into the back of a classic, little Mini - all in a desperate attempt to catch up with three men on two vintage scooters. But with Jonathan seemingly hell bent on facing up to a past he's spent years trying to forget, what choice does the mother-to-be have?

Michael Kiwanuka

Michael Kiwanuka releases his debut EP, ‘Tell Me A Tale’ on the 13th June 2011 through Communion Records. This is an exclusive stream of the EP's title track.

With Michael Kiwanuka, it’s all about the voice. A voice that he describes as “hitting straight through to the core” with direct, emotional songs about love, yearning, comfort and belonging. It’s a voice that built him a following via MySpace and small London gigs, and led Paul Butler from The Bees to invite him to the band’s Isle of Wight studio to lay down these introductory tracks. Which makes it all the more strange, really, that what Kiwanuka originally set out to be was a session guitarist who maybe wrote the odd song for other people.

Now 23, growing up in North London Michael struggled at times to see where he fitted in. An avid England and Spurs fan, he found it hard to imagine a day when a name like Kiwanuka could sit comfortably on the back of a football shirt here. Nonetheless, when his parents took him and his brother back to the Uganda to visit family, he and his brother were immediately recognised as English tourists. Like most of his schoolmates, he liked bands like Nirvana and Blur, but it was only when he discovered that Jimi Hendrix was black that he was able to imagine himself picking up a guitar.

In his teens, two other icons helped him find his voice. A friend gave him a Bob Dylan box set, and Michael was bowled over by the power of a well-crafted song, delivered with just urgent vocals and an acoustic guitar. Later, he was playing the free CD that came with a music magazine and heard an out-take of ‘Sitting on the Dock of the Bay’ in which Otis Redding was talking to the studio engineer. It made the soul icon seem more human, more accessible, and though there were later to be other influences from Bill Withers and Terry Callier to John Martyn and Laura Marling, it was Dylan and Redding who laid the foundations for Michael’s own rootsy, folk-inflected modern soul.

Written and performed by Michael Kiwanuka, produced by Paul Butler and featuring an assortment of Isle of Wight musicians as well as of course Michael on acoustic guitar, Tell Me A Tale, I Need Your Company and Worry Walks Beside Me are timeless songs that could only have come from Britain in 2011. Real, raw and achingly beautiful, they are just a taste of what is to come.

Modcast, July 2011 with Mighty Mark Baxter (Check the accent!) and Stevie Cradock.

Joining Eddie, Jonny and Dean this month are Ocean Colour Scene front man and Weller musician Steve Cradock alongside writer Mark Baxter. Million selling songwriter, accomplished musician, sharp dresser and all round top bloke, Steve Cradock is familiar to most as the long-serving guitarist in Paul Weller’s band. Recruited by Paul Weller for his band in 1993 (Weller recalling Cradock from his days in The Boys), the guitarist’s infectious enthusiasm soon kick-started OCS back into life, with second album Moseley Shoals spawning four Top Twenty hits including ‘The Riverboat Song’ .Follow up Marchin’ Already, meanwhile, knocked Oasis’ Be Here Now off the number one spot, the band’s place at Britpop’s top table confirmed with an appearance at Oasis’ Knebworth mega-gig.

Alternating between OCS and a role as The Modfather’s musical consiglieri ever since, Steve only got round to making his solo debut, the splendid Kundalini Target, twoyears ago. Chatting about in the show.. his latest album, Peace City West was recorded over a fortnight at Deep Litter Studios in Devon with a revolving cast of musicians including drummer Tony Coote, multi-instrumentalist Fred Ansell and actor James Buckley on guitar and vocals, it’s as richly melodic as you’d expect from someone with such an established musical pedigree.

Mark Baxter a late-comer to publishing with his first book “The Fashion of Football” (out 2004) under his belt.. has gone on to co-write “The Mumper” .. discussed on the show.. with previous guest Paolo Hewitt which is the inspiration for the film “Outside Bet” starring Bob Hoskins and Jenny Agutter being released this October. Next year another collaboration with Paolo sees the release of “The A-Z of Mod”.

Mark is also the PR Bar Italia in Soho and for various clothing companies, including Threadneedleman Tailors, Peckham Rye and Delicious Junction footwear. Both guests kindly offered up prizes.. Steve a goodie bag of solo material on vinyl and Cd for 2 lucky winners and Mark an exclusive 'Mumper' tie - Made by previous comp givers Peckham Rye Ties - questions and how to enter on The Modcast

Meanwhile.. Modcast HQ are getting ever closer to confirming a London date in October. More great guests lined up.. all to be announced shortly.

Billy Bragg, the prime minister in the dressing room. ;)

BILLY BRAGG - NEVER BUY THE SUN from Billy Bragg on Vimeo.

Billy Bragg should be the prime minister!

June 2008:

PAUL WELLER is desperate for fellow veteran rocker BILLY BRAGG to become the British Prime Minister - insisting it would be the only way he becomes interested in the country's government.

The former The Jam frontman is sick of similar politicians working in the U.K. - stating they are all too similar to make a difference to the country's future.

But the musician thinks folk star Bragg would be the perfect option for the prestigious role, and is upset the star hasn't already run for office.

He says, "It is a great pity he's (Bragg) not Prime Minister. I can't tell the difference between politicians, they all look exactly the same to me. They all went to the same public school, they all went to the same university - and they're all trying to pander to the mainstream.

"I'm not interested in politics to be honest. It bores the s**t out of me."

Dexys Midnight Runners are working on a new album, their first since 1985's Don't Stand Me Down. The band, who now go by the name Dexys, made the announcement on their Twitter account, @dexysofficial, which was launched on 24 June. The account has since been updated with pictures of the band rehearsing for the album, due in 2012. "Can't really say why, because it's hard to put it down to any one thing," said the original post. "It's early days, but so far so good."

Kevin Rowland:

Mick Talbot is a huge part of this, not just his playing, he's influential in the whole of this process. Commitment beyond the call of duty
